I almost got to paint another deer on the side of the locomotive tonight - and saw several hanging out near the tracks each night I ran.
Actually, we wouldn't paint deer on the side of the locomotive. Some folks might be triggered..

Tree, what is the route you currently run? ...from where to where? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Our Polar Express trips run from Utica to the North Pole, of course! (AKA Holland Patent).

Of course. :-) I should have remembered. I hope you have as much fun as it looks the kids are having. :-)
When once again looking at the link to the Polar Express, I came across a video a tourist had filmed on his RR trip from Utica to Thendara several years ago..think it was 2010. I did not watch it in full..skipped a little ahead from time to time...but What Great Scenery!!! I was a little surprised when I saw people sticking their heads out of windows to try to see what was ahead. That may no longer be possible, due to safety regulations, but it made me think that a TV screen at the end of each car with a video coming from the front of the train, filming what's ahead would be another means of enjoyment. And I loved listening to the train on the tracks and the different sounds it made. :-)
Sadly, I read that NYS is going to be ripping out tracks in parts of the Adirondacks (can't recall the exact locations) to put in more "trails". What a shame!!!!!!!! As so often, I feel NYS is behind the times and not open to what has had such great success elsewhere. I can't believe there is not a market for tourists who would love to travel to the Adirondacks, stay over night, or a day or two, at Lake Placid or Saranac Lake by rail rather than needing to get there in a car.

Suzanne - Blame the "forever wild" folks - they have no interest in a trail, they just want the tracks gone from their forest. The snowmobilers are in for a rude awakening when their trail disappears, too...

Sniff, Sniff....Boo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!! DARN!!! I so dislike groups of people who are shortsighted!!! So many of them join because being part of a group is more important than actually looking at an issue and deciding if it really is the right thing. Would it do any good for the RR people to start a petition about this? I would be more than happy to sign and promote it on my Facebook page. And I bet there are many business people in the Adirondacks..especially those near where the trains would stop who would also sign..and maybe put out a petition at their business locations. Why are people in government not more insightful about things like this? How many people using hiking trails..as compared to tourists stopping off at a train stop..will frequent their stores?

I'm quite convinced that there is a fringe group out there who feels that we should all park at the Blue Line and walk into the forest.

Well the Body count (Deer) in my opinion is reaching record levels. I received a 10 point, 180 pound buck rapped around my mail box last night after being strucked by a neighbor last night. After negotiations and a Tag from the Deputy, He is hanging in the Garage! I have never seen so many deer struct by auto as I have seen this year. I was traveling home last night and it came to me as to part of the Problem, The corn in many of the fields is still standing and the Deer are traveling to' feast on the Unharvested Corn and soybeans.

Only saw one on the way to the North Pole last night - and it was well out of my way.
Hunting season is over (except muzzle loader) - and I think they know it...

Last week was a first.
After dinner, outside emptying the coal ash pan, heard a car smack a deer a hundred yards or so away from the house.
Walk up the road to check and see if everybody is ok, get to car and front end is crumpled, no fluids leaking, guy is OK.
Deer is laying just off road, little bit of blood from hind leg, head buried in snow, real shallow breathing but not moving at all.
Guy calls 911 to get patrol on scene, we're sitting there talking for 15 minutes or so, deer hasn't moved, we're about 2-3 feet away from it the entire time.
Another minute or two, deers leg twitches a bit, suddenly deer stands up, looks at me, looks at driver and bounds about 10 yards or so down into ditch.
Shined the flashlight on her and she'd laid right back down, figured she'd stiffen up so I could pop her with the 22 when patrol arrived and they gave me the ok.
A few more minutes goes by, shine flashlight and she'd moved a hundred or so yards off the road.
Trooper finally arrives on scene, show him the deer, he tells me it's ok to go get 22 and shoot and he'd give me a tag. (Should have shot it first thing but didn't want to get a patrol having a bad night and ticketing me for shooting within 500 feet of road)
Get rifle, and then get within 10 feet or so of her and up she jumps and runs off, only running 20-50 yards at a time and stopping.
Did this 7 or 8 times and last I saw her she was about 500 yards behind house and still going, tracks in the snow showed she was dragging one rear leg..
story to be continued..

Agreed! But! I would resume the tracking and Drop the Doe and Call the Sheriff's Deputy or State and get the tag. Always get the officers Name and Never pass on Opportunity. I always carry my hand gun and would have done a Back To The Head pain reliever. I hope you get the Doe and enjoy the Harvest. We Have had 3 bucks and several does hit within a 1/4 mile of the house and a huge number from west carthage to watertown. Last week coming back from the city there is a stretch of road that the wind was having fun with blowing snow a visibility was very limited. As I drove I said to myself wouldn't this be a p-ss poor place to see a Deer crossing the road AND SURE ENOUGH HERE COMES THE HERD. Missed all six and made it home without incident. I have a 12,800 lumen for light and love it for early warning of deer when opposing traffic is not present and for those new vehicle lights glaring you in your Eyes.
